More than a decade ago, 7-year-old Brendon Mackey was killed by a bullet fired into the air, leading to tougher penalties in Virginia. In 2013, what should have been a simple walk to watch fireworks turned tragic for a Chesterfield family. Brendon was hit by a bullet that was shot into the air miles away.

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WWBT) - For many, Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer — cookouts, travel and a long weekend. But for Tina Houchins, it’s much more personal. Houchins is a Gold Star mother, and she says the entire month of May will always be “Memorial Month” — a time filled with memories of her son, Aaron Gautier, who was killed in action in Iraq. “Aaron was killed in action May 17th, 2007,” Houchins said.
