About That Deal, Ten Years On
Ten years ago today, the New York Times published the story about me getting a 10-year, 13-book contract with Tor Books, along with $3.4 million advance. And as it is, in fact, the tenth anniversary of an ostensibly ten-year contract, I thought it would be useful to check in and see where things are with me, with the contract, and with the future of my writing career. First, for context, the article I wrote when the news of the deal broke, and the article I wrote at the five-year mark.
Apple really needs that Services revenue now
The incredibly unpredictable nature of the United States’s trade policy is going to have a profound effect on Apple hardware, not just in the U.S., but globally. Whether or not Apple absorbs the costs from their margins, hikes prices, or starts to move physical production and supply chains around the globe is all up in the air when the trade policy of the United States can vacillate so wildly in the span of days. I withdrew and resubmitted this column with these wild swings.
By Grabthar’s Hammer, what a new 4K UHD anniversary edition Paramount Pictures has put together to celebrate “Galaxy Quest.”
“Never give up, never surrender!” — these are the words of the intrepid captain of the spaceship Protector, Commander Peter Quincy Taggart, a rally cry to remind his crew that in the face of insurmountable odds, one does not quit. For the last 25 years, audiences who were first introduced to Taggart and, by extension, the actor who plays him, Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen), have quoted this line alongside many others.

Friends: The Reunion Takes a Bittersweet Trip to the Past
Back in 1994, an incredible TV show premiered. I’m talking about My So-Called Life. It was groundbreaking, portraying a teen girl, Angela, as an actual teen girl–glum, silent, touchy, prone to dropping old friends without warning and dying her hair an ugly color…and also loving and supportive to her friends, occasionally willing to acknowledge her parents’ existence, and just generally figuring herself out.

20 Years Ago, 'Galaxy Quest' Offered One of Cinema's Most Positive Portrayals of Dedicated Fandom
The nascent days of the Internet brought with it a recognizable and often critical depiction of fandom in popular culture. The most familiar representation of the modern fan comes courtesy of The Simpsons, with its obese Comic Book Guy character. Arguably, that’s also one of the more insulting depictions of fans, as the otherwise unnamed Comic Book Guy is unnecessarily obsessive, snide, immature, lonely, and virginal.

Galaxy Quest, however, is not a Star Trek movie.
New 'Galaxy Quest' Doc Explores How Sci-Fi Parody Took On a Life Of Its Own!
A cultural phenomenon like “Star Trek” doesn’t come along that often, and it’s even more rare for tributes to “Star Trek” to become just as huge. But that’s just what happened when a film called Galaxy Quest hit theatres in 1999.

Game Of Thrones Season 8 Episode 3 Deep Dive Recap
By Lord Castleton | TV | May 3, 2019 | By Lord Castleton | TV | May 3, 2019 | There is probably very little I will say in this deep dive recap that hasn’t already been said in any number of posts, blogs, tweets and message board posts, but hopefully I will approach it the way I always try to, with admiration. I love Game of Thrones. Does the show always make choices I love? No. Does it always feel fulfilling? No. But I admire the scope and breadth and ambition of the undertaking.
Dragged Across Concrete
There’s a phrase on social media called “milkshake duck” or “milkshake ducking” that’s inspired by a sort-of famous Tweet that originally referred to those moments when some cool new person, artist or creation you just became a fan of turns out to be “problematic” very soon after.
Games of 2018: Managing Editor Anthony John Agnello
Many years ago, I came up with a completely arbitrary, illogical rule for determining when to buy new gaming hardware. If a machine was worth plunking down real money, it had to have eight games that I really wanted to play. In my brain, the eight game rule covered a number of bases. Eight games meant a lot of game time over the course of a long period — still true for someone who doesn’t write about video games for a living — and it guaranteed a significant variety of genres, styles, and voices.
Everything You Wanted to Know about the Declaration of Arbroath * But Were Afraid to Ask | National Review
Dear Jolter, Greetings came this week from my pal from the Constitution State, John Philip Sousa IV, and you can imagine that when the guy who protects the legacy of the man who wrote Stars and Stripes Forever sends you howdy-dos on the eve of Independence Day, well, you get the patriotic vapors and are happily shocked by the rockets’ red glares that flash in your fevered imagination.
Trump's AHPs Rule: a Generally Lousy Idea that Would Reduce Premiums for Some and Make ObamaCare's Costs More Transparent
The Trump administration has released its final rule expanding so-called association health plans. The rule would allow many consumers to avoid some of ObamaCare’s unwanted regulatory costs. But the rule also highlights both the destructive power of ObamaCare and Republicans’ utter lack of imagination when it comes to health care.

The Bizarre Scuffle in Montana’s House Race – The Chaos Report – Medium

A Fox News reporter’s eyewitness recollection is consistent with the Guardian’s story, saying the candidate grabbed Jacobs “by the neck with both hands and slammed him into the ground behind him… then began punching the reporter.” There is no video of the incident, but there is audio, here.
There’s such a thing as “too helpful”
Not too long ago Jason Fried wrote about his experience shopping at Apple Stores, in which he described the common occurrence of walking into a store and being immediately set upon by a too helpful Apple rep (the “bouncer”). In trying to be as attentive, helpful, and friendly AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE, this bouncer ended up being too helpful. Aggressively helpful. What’s it mean to be aggressively helpful?
Here Is Every Single Movie Bill Clinton Watched In The White House
“The best perk of the White House is not Air Force One or Camp David or anything else, it’s the wonderful movie theater I get here,” President Bill Clinton told Roger Ebert in 1999. According to newly released documents obtained by Gizmodo through a Freedom of Information Act request, President Clinton did indeed love watching movies at the White House.
‘Galaxy Quest’ TV Series Takes Flight at Amazon
By Grabthar’s hammer, Amazon Studios has signed on to develop a TV series based on “Galaxy Quest.” The 1999 sci-fi movie starred Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman as actors who once appeared on a “Star Trek”-like TV series — so convincingly, in fact, that the aliens who later abduct these co-stars don’t know the show is fake.
