WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - In the same park where investigators said 23-year-old Adam Smith was stabbed to death last week, his friends and family gathered for a candlelight vigil to honor his life. Even a former teacher of Smith’s attended the gathering on Wednesday, June 24, at Hanover Pines Nature Park. “He might not be here in flesh, but he’s here in spirit,” Smith’s sister, Zipporah, said. “He always lifted me up,” one person at his vigil said.

(WECT) - The family of Edilberto Espinoza-Sierra protested in downtown Wilmington after District Attorney Jason Smith announced no criminal charges would be filed against the officers and deputies involved in his shooting death. Smith said at a press conference on Wednesday, June 24, that he and senior assistant district attorneys in the Sixth Prosecutorial District determined the officers’ actions were justified.

OAK ISLAND, N.C. (WECT) - If you drive by town hall in Oak Island, you’ll see flags are being flown at half-staff. It’s to honor Shawn Barry, who died Friday, June 19, after a battle with cancer. Barry served as the town’s chief drone pilot. Fire Chief Lee Price says Barry came to Oak Island over five years ago, with decades of experience in emergency services. Price said Barry worked to improve the use of drone technology during emergencies, including in searches, rescues and fires.
