SEATTLE — The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Swedish Hospital’s First Hill campus is a place capable of working miracles. “This is where babies come when they’re first admitted,” said long time NICU doctor Terrance “Terry” Sweeney. “ We can pretty much use any resource that we need.” If you’re talking about miracle workers, look no farther than Dr. Sweeney. Since 1985, Dr. Sweeney has cared for the smallest, most fragile babies – some weighing as little as 13 ounces.

NORMANDY PARK, Wash. — The sun is high over the diamond in Normandy Park, and according to Edwin “Ed” Johnson, so are some of the pitches. Johnson is an umpire for South Highline National Little League – a volunteer gig he’s held for 56 years. “I started in 1970,” said Johnson. “I was walking by a field of kids getting ready to play baseball and I thought well I’ll just go down and watch and see what’s going on.” That casual curiosity turned into decades of service.

SEATTLE — Learning an instrument for the first time is hard, but learning it a second time can be even harder! At least that’s the experience for Keith McKenzie of Lynden. “As a musician, the sound is your end result,” said McKenzie. “There were times when I just didn’t have the strength to hit the keys hard enough to get the sound.” For decades, McKenzie played the organ and piano at his church. But in 2021, he had a debilitating stroke that led to the loss of function of his left arm.
