A Climate Rescue Mission For Puget Sound's Rare Butterfly
The island marble, considered one of the rarest butterflies in North America, only exists in a small section of the San Juan Island National Historical Park. Greg Davis Deer graze on tall prairie grass. Bushy-tailed foxes chase rabbits across a windswept landscape. Bald eagles perch along cliffs overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca and snow-capped Olympic Mountains. The southern tip of Puget Sound’s San Juan Island is a wildlife-viewing wonderland.
Cornell chief predicts wide impact from new school
The new technology campus planned for Roosevelt Island will do more than feed talent into the city's fast-growing tech sector. It will also help to give rise to an "F-train tech corridor" along the train's arc from western Brooklyn, through lower Manhattan and then out to Queens via the Roosevelt Island stop, predicted Cornell University President David Skorton, in his keynote address Tuesday at Crain's first-annual real estate conference.
E-cig industry fights New York City to avoid going up in smoke
Spike Babaian loved the way the first puff hit her lips. She never thought electronic cigarettes would be her gateway into the business world. “I thought it was a miracle device,” she said. “I just wanted everybody to have one.” Four years later, Ms. Babaian is New York City's reigning maven of e-cigarettes—battery-powered devices used to heat up and inhale liquid nicotine.

Ocean Trash: What You Need To Know
The story of a piece of litter doesn’t end at your curbside. Every year, millions of tons of trash find their way down storm drains and rivers to the ocean. Ocean currents take over from there, carrying man-made stuff thousands of miles away to far-flung corners of the planet—even to places otherwise thought to be untouched by people. And that makes marine debris difficult to clean up.
Once-Vanished Fishers Are Making Their Comeback In Washington
The twin-prop airplane banks left and crests a crooked ridgeline of the Cascade mountain range. Inside, Jeff Lewis cups his headphones firmly to his ears. He’s listening for the sound of a rare animal — one that hasn’t been seen in these mountains for more than 70 years. "We’re getting a boomer now," he says, as a faint beeping sound pulses steadily over a wall of radio static.

Guess What's Showing Up In Our Shellfish? One Word: Plastics
Sarah Dudas doesn't mind shucking an oyster or a clam in the name of science. But sit down with her and a plate of oysters on the half-shell or a bucket of steamed Manila clams, and she'll probably point out a bivalve's gonads or remark on its fertility. "These are comments I make at dinner parties," she said. "I've spent too much time doing dissections.

Can Seattle’s Seawall Defend The City And Protect Salmon, Too?
Thousands of tourists migrate to Seattle’s waterfront each year to experience the ferry rides, kitschy stores and sweeping views of Elliott Bay. Jeff Cordell says they’re overlooking something that makes the waterfront even more special: filamentous microalgae. “Brown scum,” he said on a recent visit at low tide, running a gloved finger through a carpet of slimey growth. “We love to see that.

Reduce, Reuse... Repair? Pacific Northwest Fix-It Movement Grows
Paul Savino’s first patient of the day collapsed under the weight of an overgrown child. He's seen these symptoms before. “What we have here are a couple of dowel joints that have popped and one that has snapped,” he said. “But the patient will survive, I dare say.” A piece of sandpaper, some wood glue and 20 minutes later, the toddler-sized wooden chair was back on its feet. Savino’s been mending stuff since he was small enough to fit in the chair.
Canada's Oil Pipeline To The Salish Sea: What You Need To Know
You’ve heard of Keystone XL, the controversial pipeline rejected by the Obama administration but approved this week by President Trump. And you know all about Dakota Access. That’s the oil pipeline that became a rallying point for Native American rights and environmental activism. It’s expected to be up and running in April. But have you heard of TransMountain, which could soon be the biggest pipeline of them all?

This Is How People Do Search And Rescue For Lead-Poisoned Swans
This is the second part in our series on wildlife and lead ammunition. Read part one here. It was a typical phone call for Martha Jordan. Someone had found a sickly-looking swan; Jordan had better come collect the body. When she arrived on scene, an elegant white bird with a black beak, a symbol of grace and beauty, lay draped across the tall grass at the edge of a lake. Jordan trudged through the marsh, scooped up its emaciated, 10-pound body and cradled the dead bird in her arms.

Testing next-gen solar power inverters
As more solar-energy-production systems and grid-connected energy-storage devices are readied for market, testing them must become more efficient and economical. Grid-connected distributed power generation is an increasingly important component in the power production portfolio of utilities around the world.
