Firms in Production Sectors and Northern States Have Some of the Highest Shares of Older Workers
Large firms hire many workers and, as a result, have a higher probability of ending up with a workforce that mirrors the overall U.S. workforce. Smaller firms hire fewer workers, and consequently, the characteristics of their workforces may be more varied. To account for this randomness, we calculated the expected share of employment that falls in each age-share category based on random assignment of workers to firms of various sizes and compared it to actual employment in each category.
Genetic elements promote retention of extrachromosomal DNA in cancer cells - Nature
Abstract Extrachromosomal DNA (ecDNA) is a prevalent and devastating form of oncogene amplification in cancer1,2. Circular megabase-sized ecDNAs lack centromeres, stochastically segregate during cell division3,4,5,6 and persist over many generations. It has been more than 40 years since ecDNAs were first observed to hitchhike on mitotic chromosomes into daughter cell nuclei, but the mechanism underlying this process remains unclear3,7.

Discrete Immolative Guanidinium Transporters deliver mRNA to specific organs and red blood cells - Nature Communications
Abstract RNA medicine is an emerging groundbreaking technology for the prevention and treatment of disease. However, tools to deliver messenger RNA (mRNA) and other polyanions (circRNA, saRNA, pDNA, CRISPR-Cas, reprogramming factors) are required to advance current RNA therapies and address next generation challenges. Existing delivery systems often suffer from laborious syntheses, limited organ selectivity, formulation complexity, and undesired inflammatory responses.

Single-cell multiome and enhancer connectome of human retinal pigment epithelium and choroid nominate pathogenic variants in age-related macular degeneration
Abstract Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss worldwide. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of AMD have identified dozens of risk loci that may house disease targets. However, variants at these loci are largely noncoding, making it difficult to assess their function and whether they are causal.

A long context RNA foundation model for predicting transcriptome architecture
Abstract Linking DNA sequence to genomic function remains one of the grand challenges in genetics and genomics. Here, we combine large-scale single-molecule transcriptome sequencing of diverse cancer cell lines with cutting-edge machine learning to build LoRNASH, an RNA foundation model that learns how the nucleotide sequence of unspliced pre-mRNA dictates transcriptome architecture--the relative abundances and molecular structures of mRNA isoforms.

High temporal frequency light response in mouse retina requires FAT3 signaling in bipolar cells
Abstract Vision is initiated by the reception of light by photoreceptors and subsequent processing via downstream retinal neurons. Proper cellular organization depends on the multi-functional tissue polarity protein FAT3, which is required for amacrine cell connectivity and retinal lamination. Here we investigated the retinal function of Fat3 mutant mice and found decreases in physiological and perceptual responses to high frequency flashes.

High temporal frequency light response in mouse retina is mediated by ON and OFF bipolar cells and requires FAT3 signaling
Abstract Vision is initiated by the reception of light by photoreceptors and subsequent processing via parallel retinal circuits. Here we investigated the retinal function of Fat3 mutant mice and found decreases in physiological and perceptual responses to high frequency flashes.
Charge-altering releasable transporters enhance mRNA delivery in vitro and exhibit in vivo tropism - Nature Communications
Abstract The introduction of more effective and selective mRNA delivery systems is required for the advancement of many emerging biomedical technologies including the development of prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines, immunotherapies for cancer and strategies for genome editing. While polymers and oligomers have served as promising mRNA delivery systems, their efficacy in hard-to-transfect cells such as primary T lymphocytes is often limited as is their cell and organ tropism.

Medical Student Career Perceptions of Cardiac Surgery and Cardiology
Medical students' career choices are influenced by many factors. However, it is unclear how perceptions of cardiology and cardiac surgery affect students' career choices in either specialty. This study assessed impact of advice on specialty interest, sources of advice, and what factors were associated with interest in cardiology and/or cardiac surgery. Important sources of advice were peers, preceptors, lectures, and clinical experiences.
Unionization, Employer Opposition, and Establishment Closure
Abstract We study the effect of private-sector unionization on establishment employment and survival. Specifically, we analyze National Labor Relations Board union elections from 1981–2005 using administrative Census data. Our empirical strategy extends standard difference-in-differences techniques with regression discontinuity extrapolation methods. This allows us to avoid biases from only comparing close elections and to estimate treatment effects that include larger margin-of-victory elections.
