Targeting p130Cas- and microtubule-dependent MYC regulation sensitizes pancreatic cancer to ERK MAPK inhibition
Main text (Cell Reports 35, 109291; June 29, 2021) There are errors in two figures of this paper. In Figure 6C, the p130Cas, total ERK, and phospho-p130Cas immunoblots inadvertently display alternative exposures from Figure 3D. In Figure S10B, images of four KX2-391-treated ex vivo tumors were inadvertently duplicated in the ERKi-treated ex vivo tumors.

Clinical outcomes of lyophilised human amnion/chorion membrane in treatment of hard-to-heal diabetic foot ulcers in complex cases: a case series
Objective: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a common and severe complication of diabetes, characterised by high morbidity, recurrence and risk of amputation. Hard-to-heal (chronic) DFUs often fail to respond to standard of care (SoC), necessitating advanced interventions. Lyophilised human amnion/chorion membrane (LHACM) is a trilayer placental allograft that provides extracellular matrix support, growth factors and anti-inflammatory properties to promote wound closure.
A Sustainable Path for AI Development to Empower Communities and Serve Public Interests
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly expanding and becoming deeply embedded in everyday life. However, a growing disconnect between AI company decisions and public interests is eroding public trust. This decline is driven by the public’s loss of agency in shaping AI’s role in society. Current AI alignment methods, such as Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), treat the public as a passive data source rather than an active participant.

Thomas Gilbert: Investing in Pa.'s outdoor economy
As every Pennsylvanian knows, and as those who visit or relocate here quickly discover, our commonwealth is blessed with abundant natural resources and outdoor recreation assets. With more than 86,000 miles of rivers and streams (second only to Alaska), Pennsylvania is one of the best places in the world for paddling and fishing. We have more than 12,000 miles of trails waiting to be explored on foot, on wheels, on skis or snowshoes, or even on horseback.
We Need a Germ Theory for the Internet
For years, a primary metaphor for the internet has been the “town square,” an endless space for free expression where everyone can have their say. But as scaled digital platforms have grown to dominate most of modern life, metaphors centered solely on speech have failed to explain our current civic dysfunction. Perhaps the better way to understand the internet is to compare it to a much older infrastructure problem: citywide sanitation systems.
Social media is polluting society. Moderation alone won’t fix the problem
We all want to be able to speak our minds online—to be heard by our friends and talk (back) to our opponents. At the same time, we don’t want to be exposed to speech that is inappropriate or crosses a line. Technology companies address this conundrum by setting standards for free speech, a practice protected under federal law. They hire in-house moderators to examine individual pieces of content and remove them if posts violate predefined rules set by the platforms.
Designing societally beneficial Reinforcement Learning (RL) systems - Robohub
By Nathan Lambert, Aaron Snoswell, Sarah Dean, Thomas Krendl Gilbert, and Tom Zick Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) is transitioning from a research field focused on game playing to a technology with real-world applications. Notable examples include DeepMind’s work on controlling a nuclear reactor or on improving Youtube video compression, or Tesla attempting to use a method inspired by MuZero for autonomous vehicle behavior planning.

The Fed Changed its Strategy on Interest Rates - Here’s What It Means
The Federal Reserve just took the monetary policy equivalent of a sharp 90-degree turn. On Jan. 30, the U.S. central bank signaled that it was done raising benchmark interest rates after two years of aggressive rate hikes. As such, the Fed held its target rate steady at a range of 2.25 percent to 2.5 percent. This stands in sharp contrast to six weeks ago, when the Fed was forecasting two hikes in 2019 and at least one more in 2020.

KRAS Suppression-Induced Degradation of MYC Is Antagonized by a MEK5-ERK5 Compensatory Mechanism
Inhibiting ERK1/2 and ERK5 synergistically causes MYC loss and inhibits PDAC growth KRAS regulates MYC protein stability by ERK but not by PI3K-AKT effector signaling Acute suppression of KRAS causes proteasome-dependent degradation of MYC protein Our recent ERK1/2 inhibitor analyses in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) indicated ERK1/2-independent mechanisms maintaining MYC protein stability.
Opinion | Apple Is a Hedge Fund That Makes Phones
By Thomas Gilbert and Christopher Hrdlicka Aug. 23, 2018 6:29 pm ET Photo: dado ruvic/Reuters When you buy a share of Apple stock, you do not simply buy into a $1 trillion technology company. You also buy a share of one of the world’s largest investment companies: Braeburn Capital, a wholly owned subsidiary of Apple. Braeburn manages a $244 billion financial portfolio—70% of Apple’s total book assets. Apple acts like a hedge fund by supporting this portfolio with $115 billion of debt.
Development and validation of a Hospital Frailty Risk Score focusing on older people in acute care settings using electronic hospital records: an observational study
From an initial cluster analysis, we identified a group that, when compared with other older people, had a higher incidence of ICD-10 codes judged a priori to be indicative of frailty, as well as higher hospital use and associated resource use. A Hospital Frailty Risk Score was derived from a broad set of ICD-10 codes that were over-represented in this cluster, including measures of acuity.
A Hedge Fund That Has a University
The proposed levy on investment income—dividends, interest and capital gains—is fundamentally a tax on this risk-taking, not on the endowments themselves. By taxing risk-driven income, the GOP plan doesn’t target higher education. It goes after hedge funds masquerading as university endowments.
Berkeley Journal of Sociology
While the 2012 re-election of America’s first African-American President signaled resurgence in support for social liberalism, it also announced a sea change in our media culture: the triumph of polling statisticians over the “go with your gut” prognostications of traditional punditry.
The use of linked routine data to optimise calculation of the Hospital Frailty Risk Score on the basis of previous hospital admissions: a retrospective observational cohort study
Summary Background The Hospital Frailty Risk Score (HFRS) has been widely but inconsistently applied in published studies, particularly in how diagnostic information recorded in previous hospital admissions is used in its construction. We aimed to assess how many previous admissions should be considered when constructing the HFRS and the influence of frailty risk on long length of stay, in-hospital mortality, and 30-day readmission.
