Lightweight programmable microring resonator photonic convolutional neural network for modulation format classification
Despite the rapid progress of on-chip photonic computing, optical neural networks (ONNs) remain constrained by limited kernel expressivity, weak nonlinearities, and substantial hardware overhead. To address these limitations, we propose a compact microring resonator (MRR)-based photonic convolutional neural network (PCNN) for modulation format classification from constellation diagrams.

Lactylation of USP11 fosters breast cancer development by stabilizing CDK4 and activating CDK4-RB1-E2F1 pathway
Abstract Cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CDK4) is a key player in the cell cycle. Its frequent overexpression in a multitude of cancers correlates with increased cell proliferation and resistance to CDK4 inhibitors, highlighting the critical need to target CDK4 degradation as a therapeutic approach. However, the mechanisms governing the maintenance and homeostasis of CDK4 protein levels remain elusive. Here, we identify that deubiquitinase USP11 promotes breast cancer progression by stabilizing CDK4.

Berberine prevents postoperative recurrence of colorectal cancer: a protocol for a multicenter, double-blind, randomized controlled trial
Abstract Introduction: Postoperative recurrence and metastasis of colorectal cancer (CRC) are critical factors affecting long-term survival, and how to prevent postoperative recurrence and metastasis remains an urgent clinical challenge. Studies indicate that berberine has a preventive effect against colorectal adenoma recurrence; however, no research has yet investigated its preventive efficacy against CRC.
Bacterial turbulence drives interfacial waves and shape dynamics in phase-separated droplets
Abstract Liquid-liquid phase separation is important across biology, physics, and materials science. Although usually studied at equilibrium, active components-such as motor proteins, enzymes, and synthetic microswimmers-are increasingly recognized as key players in reshaping phase separation dynamics. Yet how internally generated active stresses are transmitted to capillary interfaces to reshape three-dimensional droplet dynamics remains poorly understood.

Broadband ultrasound response in a gas environment of a DBR fiber laser sensor
Conventional ultrasonic transducers generally exhibit narrow operating bandwidths centered at specific resonance frequencies, which limit their capability for broadband ultrasonic measurements, especially in airborne or gaseous sensing scenarios. This paper presents an in-depth investigation of the ultrasonic response characteristics of a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) fiber laser sensor.
Chemotherapy-induced activation of caspase-1 and IL-1α release by cancer cells remotely skews myelopoiesis to drive pro tumorigenic systemic neutrophil-dominant inflammation
|
Abstract While chemotherapy-induced tumor cell death is known to modulate the local immune landscape, its systemic impact on distant bone marrow—a site essential for immune cell maturation—remains underexplored. Here, we show that gemcitabine chemotherapy induces inflammatory caspase-1-dependent pyroptosis in epithelial cancer cells (epiCaspase-1). Despite its inflammatory nature, epiCaspase-1-mediated cell death is non-immunogenic.

The emergence and diversification of dog morphology
Editor’s summary Modern dogs display highly divergent morphology. The vast majority of this diversity was generated through intensive human selection over only the past 200 to 300 years. Dogs were domesticated at least 10,000 years ago, but we know little about their diversity during most of their time with humans. Evin et al.
Layer-by-layer epitaxial growth of perovskite heterostructures with tunable band offsets
Editor’s summary Solvent-free, layer-by-layer heteroepitaxial growth of an inorganic perovskite, CsPbBr3, was achieved on single crystals of the two-dimensional perovskite PEA2PbBr4 (where PEA is 2-phenylethylammonium). Lu et al. grew CsPbBr3 by thermally co-evaporating CsBr and PbBr2. Precise thickness control and low surface roughness were reflected in distinctive quantum-confined photoluminescence from monolayers, bilayers, and bulk layers.
Dog domestication, from the fierce to the feisty
Modern dogs are very diverse—from the diminutive Chihuahua to the massive Great Dane. PHOTO: EALISA/GETTYIMAGES The relationship between humans and animals is as old as humanity itself. Dogs are believed to be the first animals domesticated by humans, and much of the wide physical variation that exists in dogs today is thought to result from this long-term relationship.
Integrative phylogenomics positions sponges at the root of the animal tree
Editor’s summary The increased availability of high-quality genomes and improved phylogenetic methods have led to researchers revisiting many taxon relationships. Steenwyk and King took on a highly contested debate: whether sponges or comb jellies (ctenophores) were the first lineage to diverge among animals (see the Perspective by Mulhair and Redmond).

Targeting formyl peptide receptor 1 reduces brain inflammation and neurodegeneration
Editor’s summary Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease associated with sustained brain inflammation and widespread neuronal degeneration. Li et al. showed that activation of formyl peptide receptor 1 (FPR1) expressed in microglia and brain-infiltrating macrophages triggered an immune response to myelin and promoted microgliosis and neuronal damage in an animal model of MS.
Homogenized chlorine distribution for >27% power conversion efficiency in perovskite solar cells
Editor’s summary The uneven distribution of ions from the additives used to improve perovskite films is a major problem for solar cells made of these materials. Xiong et al. found that methylammonium chloride, which is added to lower the nucleation barrier for forming the desired intermediate state during the growth of formamidinium lead iodide, creates a through-film inhomogeneity of chloride ions that degrades performance.
NUDT5 regulates purine metabolism and thiopurine sensitivity by interacting with PPAT
Abstract Cells generate purine nucleotides through de novo purine biosynthesis (DNPB) and purine salvage. Purine salvage represses DNPB to prevent excessive purine nucleotide synthesis through mechanisms that are incompletely understood. We identified Nudix hydrolase 5 (NUDT5) as a DNPB regulator.
Repair of DNA double-strand breaks leaves heritable impairment to genome function
Editor’s summary Cells organize their DNA in a three-dimensional structure that helps control which genes are turned on or off. Bantele et al. investigated whether this structure fully recovers after DNA damage is repaired. The researchers introduced precise DNA breaks and tracked changes in genome organization and gene activity.

cGAS-STING Targeting Offers Novel Therapeutic Opportunities in Liver Diseases
Abstract Cyclic GMP/AMP (cGAMP) synthase (cGAS), coupled with the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-anchored adaptor protein stimulator of interferon genes (STING), constitute key components of the type 1 interferon signaling network. cGAS detects both pathogen-derived DNA and aberrant cytosolic self-DNA, establishing the cGAS-STING pathway as a central player in autoimmune disorders, sterile inflammation, and senescence-related processes.
