WILLIAMSBURG, Iowa (KCRG) - Taking off and landing on a ship at sea is routine for today’s Navy. But the man who did it first was from Iowa. Eugene Ely was born in Williamsburg in 1886. He moved around Iowa with his father after his parents got divorced. He eventually found himself driving for a Catholic priest. “That’s when his love, aspiration, desire, and curiosity for engines, speed, vehicles really took off,” said Anna Durr, Ely’s great-great niece. His curiosity for mechanics grew.
