Foxes and coyotes locked in a backyard battle for survival in the US
She was a young coyote, healthy and stout, with thick auburn fur so vibrant it reflected off the snow. He was a biologist, holding a tranquiliser, who had been trying for a few years to trap and collar a carnivore near this particular St Paul backyard, just a few blocks from Selby Avenue in Minneapolis, the United States, amid all the homes and traffic, the bakeries and coffee shops.

Only Geoff Miller, a wildlife researcher for the University of Minnesota, thought he would be trapping a fox, not a coyote.

This lake can lay claim to the title of fishiest in Minnesota
MINNEAPOLIS — In the far north of Crow Wing County, about 30 miles beyond Brainerd, there’s a heart-shaped lake that locals don’t want anyone else to know about. A stony brook runs through it, pouring in from the northwest shore and exiting over gentle rapids on the southeast, where the water is so clear that one could count the pebbles on the bottom, and the sleek bass guarding their nests, and the schools of minnows swarming, darting and feeding in the shallows.

Brooklyn Park sergeant’s intuition set off shootout, 43-hour manhunt in Minnesota
MINNEAPOLIS — Brooklyn Park police Sgt. Rielly Nordan had just wrapped up his shift early Saturday morning when he heard that Champlin police were responding to a shooting at a home — and one of the victims was a state senator. Nobody knew then in the early hours of Saturday morning that lawmakers, or anyone other than Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were being targeted. But Nordan knew that Rep. Melissa Hortman lived nearby, in Brooklyn Park, and would be worried.

Minnesota looks to tighten regulations on feedlots to deal with persistent pollution from manure
For the first time in 25 years, Minnesota pollution regulators will step up their oversight of thousands of feedlots across the state. The new rules could change how and when the manure amassed by increasingly large livestock operations is stored and spread on fields, as that manure continues to contaminate drinking water in rural Minnesota.
Small ponds in Minnesota prairies may help save minnow species
Nick Utrup sat with a team of biologists in the tall grass, straining to see through the ripples of a small, unnamed pond. An approaching rainstorm from the west, already over the red cliffs of the nearby Blue Mounds State Park, had stirred up the wind throughout the prairie. But Utrup and the others stayed focused on finding signs of an elusive minnow.
As Bird Flu Spreads to Dairy Cows, Minnesota`s Raptors Show Signs of Building Remarkable Immunity
By Greg Stanley A little barred owl looked up from the crux of Dana Franzen-Klein's elbow, stared the veterinarian in the eye and, in as tough and menacing of a posture as he could muster, clicked his beak. The injured bird was a baby, maybe a month old. His click was a warning, that despite being a puffball barely bigger than Franzen-Klein's palm, he would bite the medical director of the Minnesota Raptor Center if he had to.

Video of wolf killing northern Minnesota deer becomes political fodder
MINNEAPOLIS — A lone gray wolf bolted past a logger last week, on the edge of a clear cut forest in northern St. Louis County. The wolf ran past a giant industrial saw and leaped over felled trees in pursuit of what was either a young doe or an antlerless buck. Seconds later, the wolf killed the deer on the other side of a neatly stacked pile of freshly cut logs, oblivious to the logger, who captured the chase on video. U.S. Rep.
Mass extinctions are happening. Can they be stopped?

Nearly all Minn. deer exposed to pesticides tied to pollinator die-off
The pesticides linked to bee, butterfly and pollinator deaths across the nation are being found in the organs of far more of Minnesota's wild deer, and in higher concentrations, than previously thought. State biologists found neonicotinoids in nearly all — 94% — of deer spleens collected from road kill and sent in by hunters last fall.

The Growing Domestic Organic Fraud Problem → Your Weekly Organic Insider - Organic Insider
Despite the fact that The Cornucopia Institute and OFARM had been warning us about fraudulent imported organic grains and other commodities for many years, it wasn’t until the explosive Washington Post investigation in 2017 that the USDA was forced to take meaningful action. The question now is how long will it take the USDA to also address the serious domestic fraud problem.
