A dataset of small-scale coal waste dumps in Shanxi Province, China from high-resolution satellite images
Abstract Coal is central to the global energy mix. Coal waste dumps, the predominant solid waste from mining operations, pose severe ecological threats through prolonged accumulation. Large coal waste dumps receive regulatory attention, but small dumps evade oversight. Their concealed locations and small footprints challenge conventional remote sensing and manual inspection, creating regulatory blind spots.

HIF1α-KLF4 signaling dictates extra-erythrocyte expression of hemoglobin conferring sorafenib resistance in hepatocellular carcinoma
Abstract Cancer cells must deal with excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) to survive severe hypoxia and anticancer therapy; however, anti-ROS mechanisms other than the well-known NFE2L2/NRF2 signaling pathway are poorly recognized. Here, we report a ROS scavenging mechanism mediated by HIF1α-KLF4-induced hemoglobin extraerythrocytically expressed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Temporal lag in post-mining regrowth amplifies carbon loss in tropical forests during the period 2000–2023
Abstract Mining-induced deforestation is an under-recognized source of tropical forest carbon loss, and the extent to which post-mining regrowth offsets this loss remains unclear. Here, we reconstruct mining-related deforestation and subsequent forest regrowth across the tropics from 2000 to 2023 using high-resolution satellite observations. We estimate that mining causes ~4537 km2 of deforestation, whereas post-mining regrowth covers ~300 km2, equivalent to 6.6% of the deforested area.

Global mining has undermined forest conservation within and beyond protected areas
|
Abstract Protected areas are widely regarded as a cornerstone of global forest conservation, yet growing mineral demand intensifies mining pressure on them. Here, we present a global assessment of mining-induced forest loss within and beyond protected areas from 2001 to 2020. We find that approximately 11% (~1372 km2) of global mining-induced forest loss occurs within protected areas, with this proportion increasing to ~19% during 2016–2020.

Nuclear OXCT1 attenuates histone β-hydroxybutyrylation-mediated MHC-I transcription
|
Abstract Understanding of the metabolic determinants influencing immunotherapy responsiveness remains limited. Here we performed a multiomics analysis of tumor biopsies from patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated with immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) and revealed that heightened expression of OXCT1, a rate-limiting enzyme in ketone body metabolism, was negatively correlated with ICB efficacy, whereas its metabolic substrate, β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), displayed an opposite effect.

Macrophage ALDH2 drives immunotherapy resistance by silencing CXCL9 through metabolic-epigenetic crosstalk
Abstract The metabolic basis of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs)-driven immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) resistance remains poorly understood. Here, in patients with immunotherapy-resistant cancer, we identify significant enrichment of TAMs marked by elevated aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) expression.

Her echocardiographic features changed in accordance with the hemodynamic alterations as treatment progressed. During a routine echocardiography before surgery, a 9-year-old girl with ASD was unexpectedly diagnosed with CP.
Impact of Adverse Pregnancy History and Demographics on Antenatal Mental Health: A Cross-Sectional Study of 897 Women
Abstract Background Common mental health disorders among pregnant women—including anxiety, insomnia, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)—significantly impair maternal well-being, quality of life, and pregnancy outcomes. Objective This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and influencing factors (specifically adverse pregnancy history and demographics) of anxiety, insomnia, and PTSD to inform targeted interventions.
Field‐Free, Deterministic Giant Spin‐Orbit Torque Switching of 1.3 T Perpendicular Magnetization With Symmetry‐Lifted Topological Surface States
1 Introduction SOT-driven magnetic switching has drawn a lot of attention in the recent decade due to its high switching speed, low energy consumption, and simple construction [1, 2]. In conventional heavy metal/ferromagnet (HM/FM) based SOT devices, the magnetization of the ferromagnet is switched by the torque from the spin current converted from the charge current via strong spin-orbit interactions inside the heavy metal.

The impact of adverse pregnancy history on the psychological status of
Introduction Anxiety, insomnia, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are highly prevalent and often co-occurring mental health challenges during pregnancy, particularly among women with a history of adverse pregnancy outcomes or complications.1,2 Recent literature (2023–2024) has further solidified this association. For instance, Kulshreshtha et al (2023)3 highlighted the unique “mental anguish” and heightened anxiety observed in “rainbow pregnancies” following prior loss.

Flippable multitask diffractive neural networks based on double-sided metasurfaces
Diffractive neural networks (DNNs) have garnered significant attention in recent years as a physical computing framework, combining high computational speed, parallelism, and low-power consumption. However, the non-reconfigurability of cascaded diffraction layers limits the ability of DNNs to perform multitasking, and methods such as replacing diffraction layers or light sources, while theoretically feasible, are difficult to implement in practice.

Bimodality in Ras signaling originates from processivity of the Ras activator SOS without classic kinetic bistability
Abstract Ras is a small GTPase that is central to important functional decisions in diverse cell types. An important aspect of Ras signaling is its ability to exhibit bimodal, or switch-like activity. We describe the total reconstitution of a receptor-mediated Ras activation-deactivation reaction catalyzed by SOS and p120-RasGAP on supported lipid membrane microarrays.

Occupying stage In the first two steps, the diamond cave position of the part to be packed is obtained; however, for rectangular and triangular parts, there may be multiple packing positions for the same part, since there are multiple packing orientations for them. To solve this problem, the new concept of the environment matching degree is proposed to determine correct placement orientation of the parts.
Error analysis and optimization for Risley-prism imaging distortion correction
Abstract The reverse ray-tracing method has become a well-known technique to correct the dynamic imaging distortion caused by the Risley-prism imaging system due to its precision and computational efficiency. However, the reverse ray-tracing method is sensitive to equipment error, which seriously degrades the quality of distortion correction when using a prism with a large wedge angle or a camera with a large field of view.
General Mechanism for Sulfate Radical Addition to Olefinic Volatile Organic Compounds in Secondary Organic Aerosol
Previous laboratory studies have suggested that sulfate radical addition to olefinic biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) is a potential formation mechanism for some organosulfates detected in ambient secondary organic aerosol (SOA). However, these studies propose conflicting reaction products, possibly because laboratory dissolved oxygen levels did not accurately reflect atmospheric conditions.
