IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - Mikai Phelps is five years old, and was born with only one working heart ventricle. Last weekend, he stepped up to the plate at Kinnick Stadium during a Savannah Bananas show and hit a ceremonial first-pitch home run in front of about 70,000 fans. Mikai was born with only one ventricle functioning. He had his first surgery at 11 days old at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital and underwent two additional surgeries after that.

Mount Vernon rallies past Dike-New Hartford for 7-0 regional semifinal win

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa (KCRG) - After coming up just short of the state tournament in 2025, the Mount Vernon softball team will get another chance in 2026. The Mustangs rolled over Dike-New Hartford in the regional semifinal 7-0, powered by their six-run rally in the fifth inning. Dike New Hartford finished their season at 16-9. The Mustangs will host Center Point Urbana in Tuesday’s regional final, a rematch of 2025’s regional final.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - After two straight years missing that state tournament, the North Linn softball team is just one win away from getting to Fort Dodge. The Lynx jumped all over Calamus-Wheatland, beating the Warriors 12-2 in the 1A regional semifinal. Calamus Wheatland ends their season with a 19-18 record. The Lynx will take on Edgewood-Colesburg with a trip to state on the line.
