Granola with puffed rice is kid-friendly and irresistible
Keya Wingfield | Special to the Washington Post I love a kid-friendly snack option that’s peanut-free, gluten-free and with little or no refined sugar. That’s where my Puffed Rice Granola comes in. As a bonus, it can easily be made vegan, takes barely more than 30 minutes to put together and is tasty enough that kids (and adults!) will eat it by the handful. Like the song "I Got Rhythm" says, who could ask for anything more?

Puffed Rice Granola makes a great snack and is also ideal for the back-to-school set since there aren’t any peanuts, and the nuts that are included are easily replaced by seeds or more dried fruit. The Kitchn: Need a crowd-pleasing snack for the big game? Homemade pretzel bites for the win!
Pretzel bites are small, cute, and popular. They’re kind of like the snack version of kitten videos. This dough is simple and straightforward, with minimal ingredients and uncomplicated bread mixing techniques. And because it only needs to rise once, the process is surprisingly fast and easy. Rather than dealing with fussy pretzel-twisting, you’re just cutting the dough rope into small bites — or, as I like to call them, pretzel pillows.

The Strawberriest Pavlova
4 hours (plus 2 hours for cooling) Meringue desserts like pavlova can seem daunting, but meringue isn't as fickle as you may believe. Some tips: Use a bone-dry bowl and whisk when whipping, and make sure you beat until stiff peaks form. Keeping the oven door closed while baking to maintain a consistent temperature is also key.
Lemongrass Chicken Noodle Salad of Dreams
This is one of my all-time favorite salads. It's refreshing and light, but bursting with punchy flavors of lemongrass and fish sauce, and the sweet, caramel tones of coconut sugar. The dressing works so well as a marinade that the chicken requires no marinating time at all, miraculously absorbing the citrusy zing while it cooks. If you can source a good-quality lemongrass paste to keep on standby in the fridge, then this salad dressing/marinade combo will be your savior in the kitchen.
Crustless Coconut Sugar Cheesecake
Cheesecake is one of my favorite desserts, and I often get requests for versions that are a bit more health-conscious. This recipe has everything you'd want from a standard cheesecake: the creamy texture, the unmistakable flavor, and a rich mouthfeel. Coconut sugar, which is lower on the glycemic index than standard granulated sugar, gives this cheesecake a slightly nutty color and caramel flavor.
Cauliflower Biryani
In biryani layers of rice and protein come together to create a luxurious meal. While this version isn't made with cauliflower rice, swapping out some of the rice and meat for cauliflower is a perfect way to lower the carb count and fat, so this dish can be enjoyed by anyone who is watching carbohydrates for a more Type 2 diabetes-friendly diet. In my household biryani night is a special one that we look forward to. Though the dish may be a bit laborious to make, the payoff is well worth it.

Celebrate Holi With This Floral, Softly Spiced Thandai Poke Cake
If there’s one thing that’s sure to brighten one’s spirits, it’s a shock of color—and that’s exactly what the Indian festival of Holi promises every year. Traditionally celebrating the arrival of spring on the Hindu calendar, Holi is observed all over the Indian subcontinent and beyond. One of its main traditions is the throwing of colored powder (called abir or gulal) at friends and loved ones, literally covering each other with the bright hues of springtime.
Celebrate Holi With This Floral, Softly Spiced Thandai Poke Cake
To make thandai, combine one cup of whole milk or nut milk with two tablespoons each of thandai masala and sugar and bring this to a boil. After the milk mixture cools, place it in the refrigerator for a few hours to chill until ready to serve. Once you taste it, you'll know: An ice-cold thandai on a sunny spring day is a true treat. Having grown up in India, I've lost count of how much thandai I've imbibed over the years.
Thandai Poke Cake
I love the flavors of ice-cold thandai. The masala mixture is a combination of various nuts, seeds, spices, and rose petals. The nuttiness is balanced with the spices, and the floral element makes it fresh. This combination lends itself wonderfully to a dessert setting, too. This poke cake is like having a cold glass of thandai-but in cake form!-and I can't imagine it not being gobbled up by family and friends. The following recipe has three components: the cake, the filling, and the topping.

Thandai Masala
Thandai masala is added to whole milk and sweetened with sugar as needed to make a classic drink for Holi. What I really love about the masala mixture, though, is that it can be used not just to make beverages, but also thandai-flavored sweets. I like to prepare a large batch of thandai masala and store it airtight in the freezer to make it last longer. A couple of notes about the nuts in this recipe: First, use blanched almonds since they are softer and do not have a raw almond flavor.

Wonton Soup
The best wonton soup recipes yield a dish that is cozy, comforting, and flavor-packed. Gateau Nantais
I first discovered gâteau nantais at Café Trama, a father-and-daughter bistro close to the Bon Marché department store. I spotted it immediately as I walked in, glowing from the marble counter. An astonishingly moist and fragrant almond cake infused with rum and vanilla, it is crowned by a white glaze that thinly crackles as the spoon digs in. As the name suggests it hails from Nantes, in the west of France.

Sunday Story: Guiding Light
Imagine spending New Year’s Eve in Times Square, or the Fourth of July at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., but every single year. That’s Diwali in Mumbai — an annual holiday that places you right in the middle of the action, where it matters the most. Observed by Indians all over the world, Diwali (duh-VAH-lee) celebrates the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
A Feast of Textures for Diwali 2022
Diwali, which falls on October 24 this year, is a festival that celebrates light: the light that's in us and the light around us. It's about the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. It has always been my favorite time of year. When I was growing up in Mumbai, the celebrations were full of marigold garlands, string lights, and rangoli (handmade sand art). If you caught a bird's-eye glimpse of Mumbai during Diwali, you'd swear the city sparkles.

Mango Snack Cake By Keya Wingfield, owner of Keya & Co. baking studio When Keya Wingfield was growing up in Mumbai, she and her family would travel annually to their mango farm and enjoy a bit of peace and quiet outside the city. Twice a year, the family would get 50-pound sacks of mangoes delivered to their flat, which meant that coming up with a plan for these summer fruits was imperative.
Hot Milk Cake Is the Little Black Dress of Cakes
Although recipes for hot milk cake date back to the early 1900s, the sponge didn't become popular until the 1930s. Bakers adored the cake for its ease and versatility and also because it was inexpensive to make. When ingredients like eggs, dairy, and sugar were rationed during World War II, cooks turned to economical desserts like mayonnaise cake and hot milk sponge, which allowed them to bake with a lean pantry.
Gooey Butter Cake
The signature dessert of St. Louis, this gooey butter cake is exactly what its name suggests: a wonderfully gooey treat that doesn't quite set when baked. Cake mix and cream cheese versions exist, but locals know that the original was made from scratch using yeast. But is the original from St. Louis? Or was this cake a typical German kuchen (cake) of the early 20th century, baked and sold in the German bakeries that dotted the Midwest?
