ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Alaska Earthquake Center Tsunami Modeler Elena Troshina said there's a tool that could help save lives. “That tsunami like '64, we don't know when it's going to happen again. At some point it will happen again we just don't know exactly like which part of the Alaska subduction zone it will happen and when,” Troshina said. It would be particularly helpful in Alaskan communities where getting to high ground quickly when a tsunami is on its way is not possible, she said.

The newly-exposed land came crashing down into deep fjord waters on Aug. 10, 2025, causing what scientists called a “mega tsunami” in Tracy Arm, which sits south of Juneau. August 2025 Tracy Arm Landslide The force from the landslide pushed the water about about 1,600 feet up the fjord wall.
