Water flowing as expected in Goshen/Gering-Fort Laramie Irrigation Canal
GERING — Water is slowly being pumped through the Goshen/Gering-Fort Laramie Irrigation Canal following a tunnel collapse that kept the canal dry for six weeks. According to Gering-Fort Laramie Irrigation District Manager Rick Preston, water has reached the end of the canal and crews are working to open laterals and gates to deliver the much-needed water to irrigators along the line. Preston said the hope is that all recipients would have water within the next couple of days.
Alliance community looking to fill empty buildings after stores like Shopko, Kmart close
ALLIANCE — The business community in Alliance has taken some hits over the past few years, but the city’s mayor said it’s nothing unusual and nothing that can’t be overcome. “I think we’re like most rural communities,” Mayor Mike Dafney said. “Things cycle economically. We lost Kmart. We lost Shopko. Scottsbluff lost Herberger’s. It’s a normal cycle of managing a municipality. You lose businesses and you recruit business.

Live On Nebraska promoting Hispanic organ donation
Across the country, there is an increasing need for Hispanic organ donors, and Nebraska is no different. Nationwide, multi-cultural communities make up 60% of those on the transplant waiting list – one-third of which are Hispanic. Unfortunately, the percentage of Hispanic and multi-cultural donors is disproportionately small.

Genetic drivers of heterogeneity in type 2 diabetes pathophysiology - Nature
Abstract Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a heterogeneous disease that develops through diverse pathophysiological processes1,2 and molecular mechanisms that are often specific to cell type3,4. Here, to characterize the genetic contribution to these processes across ancestry groups, we aggregate genome-wide association study data from 2,535,601 individuals (39.7% not of European ancestry), including 428,452 cases of T2D.

SLC16A8 is a causal contributor to age-related macular degeneration risk - npj Genomic Medicine
Abstract Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a complex neurodegenerative disease, is a leading cause of visual impairment worldwide with a strong genetic component. Genetic studies have identified several loci, but few causal genes with functional characterization. Here we highlight multiple lines of evidence which show a causal role in AMD for SLC16A8, which encodes MCT3, a retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) specific lactate transporter.
GWAS of random glucose in 476,326 individuals provide insights into diabetes pathophysiology, complications and treatment stratification - Nature Genetics
|
Abstract Conventional measurements of fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels investigated in genome-wide association studies (GWAS) cannot capture the effects of DNA variability on ‘around the clock’ glucoregulatory processes. Here we show that GWAS meta-analysis of glucose measurements under nonstandardized conditions (random glucose (RG)) in 476,326 individuals of diverse ancestries and without diabetes enables locus discovery and innovative pathophysiological observations.

Improving reporting standards for polygenic scores in risk prediction studies
Abstract Polygenic risk scores (PRSs), which often aggregate results from genome-wide association studies, can bridge the gap between initial discovery efforts and clinical applications for the estimation of disease risk using genetics. However, there is notable heterogeneity in the application and reporting of these risk scores, which hinders the translation of PRSs into clinical care.
Large-Scale Analyses Provide No Evidence for Gene-Gene Interactions Influencing Type 2 Diabetes Risk
Genetics/Genomes/Proteomics/Metabolomics Abstract A growing number of genetic loci have been shown to influence individual predisposition to type 2 diabetes (T2D). Despite longstanding interest in understanding whether nonlinear interactions between these risk variants additionally influence T2D risk, the ability to detect significant gene-gene interaction (GGI) effects has been limited to date.
Genetics meets proteomics: perspectives for large population-based studies - Nature Reviews Genetics
Abstract Proteomic analysis of cells, tissues and body fluids has generated valuable insights into the complex processes influencing human biology. Proteins represent intermediate phenotypes for disease and provide insight into how genetic and non-genetic risk factors are mechanistically linked to clinical outcomes.
The increasing likelihood of temperatures above 30 to 40 °C in the United Kingdom - Nature Communications
Abstract As European heatwaves become more severe, summers in the United Kingdom (UK) are also getting warmer. The UK record temperature of 38.7 °C set in Cambridge in July 2019 prompts the question of whether exceeding 40 °C is now within reach. Here, we show how human influence is increasing the likelihood of exceeding 30, 35 and 40 °C locally.

Nitrogen transformations differentially affect nutrient‐limited primary production in lakes of varying trophic state
Abstract The concept of lakes “evolving” phosphorus (P) limitation has persisted in limnology despite limited direct evidence. Here, we developed a simple model to broadly characterize nitrogen (N) surpluses and deficits, relative to P, in lakes and compared the magnitude of this imbalance to estimates of N gains and losses through biological N transformations.

Is Your Job Boring?
Ahhhhh... A nice early March afternoon in the Arctic Circle diving for lost torpedoes. Sound like fun? Perhaps if you join the Navy, you can join up with this crew. This Navy diving team is based out of Virginia Beach!! They took a sub ride up to the Circle, busted through the frozen surface, set up camp (complete with an awesome Northern Lights show every night!) and went diving deep in the Arctic Ocean training for Torpedo Recovery. So Ya Wanna Be A Driving Instructor?
Her first minute behind the wheel she does this!! A teenage girl was in the process of taking her road test when she inadvertently put the vehicle in drive instead of reverse. As she accelerated, the car went up the curb and struck the building that housed the exam station office. The driving instructor, a 60-year-old woman, was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was not injured, and no injuries were reported to people in the building.

The cautionary message released on Tuesday by police comes amid increases in stolen vehicle reports. Most thefts occured when cars were left running and unattended.
Ed Sheeran Vs. Tiny Amphibians
Ed Sheeran recently submitted plans to build a Saxon-style chapel on his Suffolk, England property. But because of his neighbor's concerns for a particular type of amphibian, it looks like the local government won't allow the construction to take place. The portion of Ed's property in question is home to the great crested newt, a protected species in Great Britain.
What's Up With Schlotzsky's Deli?
Not sure if you noticed, because there's only 4 Hampton Roads locations and they're NEVER busy. But it seems Schlotzsky's is trying to reinvent themselves as Larry's Deli. Same bread, same menu, same overpriced items, with very little fanfare. Very strange. I gotta admit, when I first discovered Schlotzsky's about 20 years ago, I was an instant fan. But when prices started to rise with next to no menu change, I bailed. And that was about 10 years ago. Are most of you in the same boat with me?

Cardi B's Speech My Favorite IHRMA Moment
While accepting the award onstage, Cardi gave a speech that left everyone cheering. First; the rapper thanked her publicist, fans and family for all of their support. “I wanna thank my fans, Bardi Gang, because even when I’m wrong they be like, ‘She’s still right!’” Cardi laughed. Then, Cardi gave a special shoutout to all the people who hate on her grind. After all, they beg for attention from her so much anyway, so why not?
Original Cavalier Hotel Back Open
The Cavalier Hotel officially opened Wednesday with a “Grand Reveal” event on the front lawn. About 100 people gathered at dusk on the brick pathway as lights illuminating the hotel were switched on. It took longer than expected, but the face lift is now complete. If you haven't had a chance to see it yet, why not take a ride to the Oceanfront this weekend and take a look at "The Grande Dame" for yourself.
How Long Can You Hold It?
This has to be some type of World Record! British prosecutors were forced to drop drug charges against a suspect who refused to use the toilet while he was in custody for 47 days. Lamarr Chambers, 24, of Brixton was arrested on Jan. 17 after being chased by police. He was suspected of swallowing drugs during the chase. Once it was apparent he would not cooperate, the local precinct that made the bust posted this: Chambers refused to take laxatives while in custody but ate and drank, officials said.
