SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - One of the bloodiest battles of the Revolutionary War was fought in downtown Savannah, commemorated each year on its anniversary of Oct. 9. The Siege of Savannah in 1779 brought together American Patriot forces and their French allies in a daring attempt to drive the British out of Georgia. For weeks, the allied forces surrounded Savannah and demanded the British forces surrender.

Phillips, a fourth-grade math teacher at James Bacon Elementary School in Jesup, said teaching in the community where she grew up makes her work especially meaningful. “I grew up right here in Jesup, Georgia,” Phillips said.
