HAMILTON, Ill. (WGEM) - Hamilton sixth grade teacher Kelly Celania was awarded the WGEM Golden Apple Award. Celania started the World Fair for Hamilton students 25 years ago. She calls it her favorite day of the school year. “I remember the group of kids I had the first year I did it,” Celania said. “We just did it in the hallway and now it’s grown into this school wide thing.” Jessica Bell, a Hamilton sixth grade teacher, said the event has become a school tradition.

Western Junior High teacher wins Golden Apple Award

KINDERHOOK, Ill. (WGEM) — Western Junior High School teacher Kim Koeller was awarded the WGEM Golden Apple Award. Koeller has spent nearly 35 years teaching at her alma mater, a rarity in modern education. “Spending almost 35 years in one district is really rare, something you are not going to find hardly at all anymore,” said Lacy White, Western Junior High School principal. “There’s not many people that stay in education that length of time.” Teaching was not Koeller’s original plan.

Sanitation worker wins Career Makeover, pursues nursing degree

MOUNT STERLING, Ill. (WGEM) — Sam Kessinger won this year’s Career Makeover from WGEM and John Wood Community College Foundation. Kessinger works as a sanitation worker at Dot Foods warehouse in Mount Sterling, walking 10 to 12 miles a day cleaning plastic, cardboard and wood pieces to keep the space safe. “I’m not ashamed of what I do. It puts food on the table and pays our bills, but it’s not where I want to stop in life,” Kessinger said. Kessinger’s path has included detours.
