America's AI Boom Has a Blue-Collar Challenge
America's artificial intelligence future may depend as much on electricians, welders, and construction workers as it does on software engineers. Technology companies are investing at a remarkable pace in the infrastructure needed to power AI. Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, and Alphabet are expected to spend about $700 billion just this year. That figure doesn't include the additional investments required for semiconductor manufacturing and electric grid renovation.

Implement commonsense protections from weather disasters
From wildfires in the west to hurricanes and heavy flooding in the east, the United States has recently suffered several significant natural disasters. Experts say these extreme weather events are becoming more frequent. This summer’s heat, fires, and flooding took the lives of at least 338 people ; destroyed thousands of homes, businesses, and crops; and cost the U.S. billions in damages.
Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act a win for Ohio

Portman: $875,000 in grant funding for drug-free community programs in Ohio
U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) announced that the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) has awarded $875,000 grant funding for Drug-Free Community (DFC) Programs throughout Ohio. In 1997, Portman authored the Drug-Free Communities Act, which supports evidence-based, community-oriented drug prevention programs.

2017 tax reforms continue to pay dividends
A recent, little-noticed update on federal revenue projections from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office is yet another reason to reject the massive tax increases proposed by the Biden administration. CBO estimated that going forward federal taxes will bring in significantly more money than previously estimated. In 2022, CBO now projects a 10% increase in revenues.
Biden’s border policies are worsening the opioid crisis
The latest data on the opioid crisis shows how the COVID-19 pandemic reversed the progress America was making in decreasing drug overdose deaths. More than 90,000 Americans died of overdoses between September 2019 and September 2020. Last year, drug overdose deaths rose by more than 27 percent in New York and more than 24 percent in Ohio. Based on current trends, we expect 2021 to be as bad, if not worse.
CARA 3.0 will help Ohioans beat addiction
For years, the United States has struggled to overcome an epidemic of addiction that has devastated communities in Ohio and across the country. Unfortunately, recent data suggests that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic worsened this crisis. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), at least 81,000 people died from a fatal drug overdose between June 2019 and May 2020 — the highest 12-month total in our nation’s history.

Stopping the Crisis at the Border
I recently traveled to the southern border with colleagues from both sides of the aisle to see the unfolding crisis firsthand and come up with solutions. The surge and resulting chaos is well documented. More than 100,000 migrants were apprehended in February, the most in 15 years. This included more than 9,500 unaccompanied kids, a 200% increase from this time last year. March numbers will be even higher, easily surpassing the surges in 2014 and 2019. And it hasn’t reached its peak.

We can’t wait for the pandemic to end to fight the opioid overdose surge
Drug-related overdoses, especially those attributed to opioids, are surging during the coronavirus pandemic. With over 500,000 deaths attributed to COVID-19, policymakers are rightly focused on vaccines, therapies, testing and other public health measures. But we can’t ignore the growing drug epidemic and risk it spiraling even further out of control. More than 40 states have reported an increase in opioid-related deaths during the pandemic, the American Medical Association reports.
Politico: Ohio's GOP U.S. Senate candidates flew to Florida to audition for Trump
The Republicans who want to be Ohio's next U.S. Senator flew to Florida this week to audition for former President Donald Trump, Politico reported Thursday. Trump's endorsement is considered key to winning any Ohio GOP primary for the seat being vacated by Sen. Rob Portman, a retiring Republican from Terrace Park, near Cincinnati. According to Politico, the four candidates attended a fundraiser Wednesday night at Trump's West Palm Beach golf club.
Democrats’ rhetoric not matched by action
By Sen. Rob Portman - (R-OH) Our country seems more divided along partisan lines than at any time I can remember. That’s why I was pleased to hear President Biden encourage bipartisanship in his inaugural address. I agree with his statement that, at “our historic moment of crisis and challenge … unity is the path forward.” Unfortunately, that rhetoric has not yet been matched by action.
Portman opposes Electoral College challenge
WASHINGTON, DC - Today, U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) released the following statement on the upcoming formal count of the Electoral College votes by Congress: “The Constitution created a system for electing the President through the Electoral College that ensures the people and the states hold the power, not Congress. I cannot support allowing Congress to thwart the will of the voters.
Portman: 2020 in review
I think we are all ready for 2020 to be over. It’s been a tough year. The health care and economic crises caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have changed so much of our lives, and too many Ohioans have lost their jobs, their businesses, or their loved ones to this disease. The good news is that the vaccines are coming and I am hopeful they will soon help us turn the corner in this pandemic.

The path forward on the 2020 election
By Sen. Rob Portman Editor’s note: This is an excerpted version of U.S. Sen. Rob Portman’s column that appeared this week in the The Cincinnati Enquirer. _____ I have supported the Trump campaign’s right to count every lawful vote, request state recounts, and pursue lawsuits regarding election fraud or other irregularities. Based on polling, a substantial majority of the nearly 74 million Americans who supported President Trump question the legitimacy of the election.
Vaccines key tool in fight against coronavirus
Ohio, like the rest of the country, is currently experiencing an unprecedented surge in coronavirus cases. The number of new cases per day in Ohio has more than doubled over the last three weeks. In short, the trajectory is not good, with not just more cases, but more hospitalizations, more visits to the ICU, and sadly, more fatalities. We need to take every measure available to us to reverse this trend.
Why I voted for Amy Coney Barrett
By Sen. Rob Portman This week, I was proud to vote to confirm Judge Amy Coney Barrett to serve on the Supreme Court. She is an impressive person and a distinguished legal scholar who is well qualified for the job. In fact, the American Bar Association judges her to be “well qualified”, their highest rating. All of America got to see her demonstrate her deep knowledge of the law and her thoughtful, calm approach in the confirmation hearings.

In the social distancing era, rural America needs broadband
By Sen. Rob Portman Over the last six months, the United States has seen various forms of lockdown as we have worked to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. These uncertain times have led many of us to make changes in the way we work, learn, and communicate.
Parks Act preserving Ohio’s treasures
Earlier this month marked a momentous breakthrough in our efforts to safeguard our public lands when President Trump signed into law my Restore Our Parks Act — bipartisan legislation that will protect and conserve our national parks for generations to come. I have worked for years to get this important legislation passed to protect America’s treasures. Ohio is home to eight incredible National Park sites that need to be preserved.

We must keep working to fight addiction
For more than 25 years, I’ve worked to address the drug addiction epidemic that has affected so many lives across Ohio. Over the last several years, I have been encouraged by the progress we have made in fighting this disease, especially with regard to opioids like heroin and prescription painkillers.

Make FAST-41 permanent
While our country continues to work to respond to the unprecedented coronavirus crisis, there is a bipartisan consensus in Washington that we must also cooperate to get our economy going again and help people get back to work safely. I believe infrastructure must be part of that conversation. This has long been a priority for both parties and the president, and there is no better time than right now to come together around a solution.

A message to Ohio’s 2020 graduates
At this time of year, thousands of Ohio students would normally be walking across stages in auditoriums, gyms and arenas to proudly accept their high school, college, or graduate school diplomas. With graduations canceled this year, students and their teachers, friends, and families will miss the chance to celebrate together. I will, too. I was really looking forward to being at several Ohio community college graduation ceremonies as the commencement speaker.

Portman: Coronavirus has strained our health system, but we can’t take our eyes off the addiction crisis
As the coronavirus pandemic has gripped the world, it seems as though every aspect of life before this crisis has been put on hold. Schools are closed, church pews are empty, and businesses have shuttered. Yet even in this unprecedented time, we cannot forget about the many concerns we had before the pandemic.

Working for Ohio during the coronavirus crisis
By Sen. Rob Portman - Contributing columnist The unprecedented coronavirus pandemic has changed every facet of life in a short span of time. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has estimated that unemployment for this quarter could rise to over 10 percent. According to a recent poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation, nine in 10 adults are now officially socially distancing themselves. In Ohio, more people filed for unemployment in March alone than in all of 2019.

How the Senate should implement remote voting in emergencies
It is time for Congress to change its rules to let members of the House and Senate vote from their states or districts when there is a true national emergency that makes it impossible or unwise to come together in the Capitol. A few weeks ago, I introduced a bipartisan Senate resolution with Sen.

Sens. Portman and Graham: Beat coronavirus and restore the world's greatest economy
America is on hold. The coronavirus has spread to every corner of our country, and even those who have not been directly affected have seen every aspect of their lives upended. The health risks of this virus are real, and the social distancing and self-isolation of those exposed are necessary to slow the spread. But putting America on hold is having its own dire consequences.
