Burden of sarcopenia and impact of structured physical programme in children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia
Background: Survival in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) now exceeds 80%, yet treatment-related muscle loss may adversely affect functional outcomes. Data on sarcopenia in Asian pediatric ALL populations remain limited. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of low muscle mass in children with ALL at a tertiary pediatric center and to explore the feasibility of longitudinal muscle assessment within a small exercise pilot subgroup.
John Iliffe obituary
When John Iliffe, who has died aged 87, wrote his book The African Poor: A History (1987), the continent was readily dismissed by many academics as a home of problems and poverty, with no intellectual depth. But Iliffe acknowledged no such limitations, and it came as no surprise that it won the African Studies Association's best book prize, then known as the Herskovits prize.

What Seniors Should Know About Statins
In this ongoing column, Kaiser Permanente doctors will answer commonly asked questions. Cholesterol is essential for the functioning of all human organs, but nevertheless, it plays a key role in coronary heart disease. But scientists and the pharmaceutical industry have developed statins, an effective class of drugs that lowers cholesterol levels and reduces heart attacks. Q: What are statins and why are they so popular with cardiologists?
Trial design and end points in hepatocellular carcinoma: an EASL–AASLD–ILCA consensus statement
Abstract The management of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has undergone radical change over the past decade. Immunotherapies now dominate the treatment of advanced-stage disease and are increasingly being evaluated in perioperative and intermediate-stage settings. However, in some instances, positive phase III trials have not translated into adoption by guidelines or regulatory agencies, highlighting the need to harmonize and update the current standards for trial design and end points.

Systemic Therapy for Advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma in 2026: Current Standard-of-Care and Emerging Therapeutic Strategies
1 Introduction Liver cancer ranks third among causes of cancer-related mortalities around the world, with approximately 800 000 deaths per year [1]. It is estimated by the WHO that by 2030, more than one million patients will die from liver cancer annually [1]. The most common primary liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), accounting for up to 80% of all cases.
Adjuvant Pembrolizumab Fails to Improve Recurrence-Free Survival in Hepatocellular Carcinoma
Key Clinical Takeaways: In the phase 3 KEYNOTE-937 trial, adjuvant pembrolizumab did not significantly improve recurrence-free survival compared with placebo following curative-intent resection or local ablation for hepatocellular carcinoma. No differences were observed between treatment arms in overall survival, distant metastases–free survival, or time to recurrence at a median follow-up of more than 4 years.

Wild-type KRAS activation drives evasion of interferon-mediated immunity and resistance to immunotherapy in hepatocellular carcinoma - Nature Communications
Abstract Increasing evidence indicates that activation of oncogenic pathways contributes to an unfavourable tumour immune microenvironment (TIME), ultimately resulting in resistance to immunotherapy. Here, we aim to identify a critical oncogenic pathway involved in an antigen-expressing c-MYC-lucOSOE/Tp53KO hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) mouse model that simulates immune response against tumour-associated antigens.
Raila Odinga obituary
Raila Odinga, who has died aged 80, was the prime minister of Kenya from 2008 until 2013 and a longtime leading member of his country’s opposition. A man who was both divisive and revered, he came from an aristocratic political lineage. His father, Oginga Odinga, had been a leading figure in the movement for independence from Britain in 1963 and served as vice-president to the country’s first president, Jomo Kenyatta, who begat his own lineage.

The writing on the arterial wall: epigenetic control of blood pressure and vascular remodeling
Abstract Hypertension is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, with pathologic consequences on multiple end-organ systems. Smooth muscle plasticity and its epigenetic regulation promote disease pathogenesis, but the genetic levers that control such activity are incompletely defined. Pulmonary Hypertension: When cell teamwork turns toxic
Cells rely on cues from their environment to develop and work properly. Yet this interdependence can turn perilous when one cell goes rogue, triggering an unchecked cascade of dysfunction. For decades, understanding these toxic cellular relationships has been hindered by a fundamental challenge: the inability to simultaneously study molecular details and tissue-wide interactions. Earlier studies often prioritized one scale at the expense of the other and, because this, missed critical connections.

Sam Nujoma obituary
The first president of Namibia, Sam Nujoma, who has died aged 95, was one of the original liberation leaders who fought against the colonial project of southern Africa and, in particular, the racist apartheid regime of South Africa that had ruled his country since the end of the first world war. Nujoma may not have been as great as Nelson Mandela in any moral sense, nor as Robert Mugabe in terms of the militarised conduct of liberation.

A Closer Look at the Meaning of ‘Investor’ in Investment Treaty Arbitration
Investment treaties are agreements between states aimed at encouraging their respective citizens to invest in another country by having the host country promise to protect their investment. Such treaties might be multilateral investment treaties between many states (‘MITs’), or bilateral investment treaties between two (‘BITs’).

Winding-Up Applications and Arbitral Clauses - The English and Hong Kong Courts Diverge
Introduction Should having an arbitration clause in an agreement prevent a party from being able to seek winding-up proceedings for an unpaid debt? This is a question that has caused disagreement in various courts in recent years, as it touches on two competing areas of public policy. On the one hand, it is in the public interest that there be a relatively simple means by which an insolvent company can, without undue delay, be put into insolvency.

Effectiveness and safety of continuous low-molecular-weight heparin versus switching to direct oral anticoagulants in cancer-associated venous thrombosis | Nature Communications
Abstract Given the existing uncertainty regarding the effectiveness and safety of switching from low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) to direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in patients with cancer-associated venous thrombosis (CAT), we conducted a comprehensive population-based cohort study utilizing electronic health database in Hong Kong. A total of 4356 patients with CAT between 2010 and 2022 were included, with 1700 (39.0%) patients switching to DOAC treatment.
Ten years of improvement in the treatment of liver cancer
For a long time, just two multi-kinase inhibitors, sorafenib and lenvatinib, were available for systemic therapy in advanced liver disease. Although these agents afforded relatively good tolerability compared with existing systemic chemotherapies, survival times generally did not extend beyond 12 months for patients and deterioration following any initial response was an inevitability. Today, the treatment landscape looks very different.

South Africa election: ANC’s lost majority ushers in a new era of coalition politics Original
From the moment this year’s South African general election was called, through the whole campaign, the main question everyone here was asking was whether the African National Congress (ANC) could extend its 30-year rule. The party of Nelson Mandela, elected in 1994 on a wave of euphoria and hope, has had its difficult moments – notably during the Zuma years of corruption – but its hold on power had always seemed electorally assured. It had brought liberation and taken South Africa forward.
