HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - Heat is one of the leading causes of vehicle breakdowns during the summer months. Hot weather doesn’t just make for uncomfortable conditions. Safety officials said extreme heat can be just as dangerous as winter weather when it comes to driving. Lori Weaver Hawkins, public affairs manager with AAA Bluegrass, said emergency roadside service teams are responding to increased calls for dead batteries, engine trouble and overheated vehicles.

(WSAZ) - Mike Maynard has been the executive director of the Hillcrest-Bruce Mission in Ashland for nine years this month. “It is the greatest thing to be able to come in here every single day,” Maynard said. “And the only mission --the only job I have is to find ways to help people.” The mission has a food pantry that serves 350 people. They also deliver about 300 boxes of food to senior citizens in the community.

As temperatures climb into dangerous territory, finding relief from the heat can be as simple as walking through the doors of your local library. The Cabell County Public Library is serving as one of several cooling stations across the county.
