EUGENE, Ore. — The Eugene Science Center is ready for more guests to get hands-on -- opening its new Outdoor Science Park Monday. The opening marks phase one of two for the project. It includes play structures that help early education students learn about timing and momentum, a rocket ship, and a geometric climber that teaches about geometry and shapes.

Lane County reports homelessness down 7.5% year over year, with 364 fewer people

EUGENE, Ore. — A slight decline in homelessness is being reported in Lane County with the county's Human Services Division saying 364 fewer people were homeless in January of 2026 compared to January of 2025. From 4,854 to 4,490, that puts the number down 7.5 percent. The Homelessness By Name List, used year-round by more than 30 agencies to collect data on those using services for the homeless, was used to come up with that count.

That's thanks to Camp Ready2Respond which comes to a close Friday in Albany. In its first year, Camp Ready2Respond will send home 130 students from all over the state with disaster preparedness experience. "Southern Oregon got absolutely ravaged by the Almeda fires in 2020, and you know at the time, there was nothing really any of us could have done.
