What was your first job as a journalist?
Writing for Mouth Magazine. Although it didn't pay, the editor sent me books and introduced me to everyone I needed to know.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Harriet the Spy, doh.
What's your favorite social network?
Right now, none of them! But I'm on Facebook and Instagram more than what's good for me.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Yes, I wrote terribly short terrible articles about boring topics.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Probably A People's History of the ADA. I wrote it in a weekend, for free, to help out the Legacy Project when theirs fell through.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Being a kickass writer and editor is no longer enough. Take a photography course, and learn to shoot video. Sorry.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
The New York Times.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That disability is weak, uninteresting or too soft. It's the movement that has the best chance of improving everything for everyone.
