Letters: St. Jude Community Center deserves better Original
I’m distressed and incensed at the protracted battle over the fate of the St. Jude Community Center. To make this active, much-needed ministry a pawn in the legal battles of the archdiocese is a shame. This center serves a diverse and vibrant community, many of whom are poor and homeless and desperately need such ministry. Why was it chosen to be sold, rather than other disused or empty properties, such as the abandoned school mentioned in a recent letter by a parishioner of St. Rosalie in Harvey?
Nurse's fatal house call ups concern for healthcare workers' safety
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. (AP) — The killing of a Connecticut nurse making a house call in October was a nightmare come true for an industry gripped by the fear of violence. Already stressed out by staffing shortages and mounting caseloads, heathcare workers are increasingly worrying about the possibility of a patient becoming violent — a scenario that is too common and on the rise nationwide.

NTSB chair warns ‘culture of silence’ around mental health is affecting safety
(CNN) — The head of the National Transportation Safety Board warned that aviation workers who need to “think twice” before reporting their mental health issues to the federal government have created “a culture of silence that is affecting safety.” “No one, no one, should have to think twice about their job before seeking help and yet here we are today because that’s not currently the case in aviation,” NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said at the opening of a daylong summit exploring the issue,...

Texas woman forced to carry high-risk pregnancy files lawsuit to have abortion
(CNN) — A pregnant Texas woman who says her unborn baby has a genetic condition and carrying the child to term could threaten her life filed suit against the state Tuesday, asking a court to declare she has the right to terminate the pregnancy. Kate Cox said the state’s current abortion ban puts her husband and her gynecologist at legal risk if she has an abortion in Texas.
Letters: Coastal residents should expect altered way of life
Where will people on Louisiana's "working coast" live if they have to pay $800 a month in homeowner's insurance? Probably in dormitories built on raised steel pilings, like in China, while their homes are on higher ground with more affordable insurance. Louisianans are famously resistant to change, but they won't be able to resist climate change. BILL HUEY Baton Rouge Want to see your opinion published in The Advocate | Times-Picayune? AI's future could be 'open-source' or closed
Tech leaders have been vocal proponents of the need to regulate artificial intelligence, but they’re also lobbying hard to make sure the new rules work in their favor. That's not to say they all want the same thing. Facebook parent Meta and IBM on Tuesday launched a new group called the AI Alliance that’s advocating for an “open science” approach to AI development that puts them at odds with rivals Google, Microsoft and ChatGPT-maker OpenAI.

When will the Rampart streetcar return in New Orleans? Curious Lousiaia has an update.
|
When the half-finished Hard Rock Hotel collapsed in New Orleans on Oct. 12, 2019, concrete floors pancaked and steel rebar tore away, leaving a ragged heap of debris on the construction site. Nearby buildings were damaged, and parts of Rampart Street and Canal Street would be closed for the next year and a half. Most tragically, three workers were killed. It took months to recover their bodies from the unstable wreckage of the building.

Will Avelar surprised many (myself included) when he left the top culinary spot at Emeril Lagasse’s downtown restaurant Meril to start a small family tortilla factory in Metairie, Mawi Tortillas. That venture has grown into an excellent Latin American restaurant, in addition to its wholesale tortilla production. Now, Avelar has a new position with a Metairie-based restaurant hospitality group with restaurants in New Orleans and Baton Rouge and more on the way.

Police said the men plotted the intrusion after the Butler brothers posted a photo of themselves on social media holding wads of money.

Syracuse hits LSU with avalanche of points in second half of ACC/SEC Challenge matchup
The LSU and Syracuse men's basketball teams were as cold in the first half as the bone-chilling cold and snow outside the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, New York, on Tuesday night. The Orange managed to weather a brutal first half better than the Tigers when it heated up in the second half and raced to an easy win on the first night of the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge.
Saints' loss to Falcons puts them at a new low in eyes of national media
Given the stakes and the way they lost, the New Orleans Saints might have suffered their most frustrating defeat in a season full of them Sunday in Atlanta. The 24-15 loss to the rival Falcons included five red-zone failures (the Saints settled for four field goal tries, and Derek Carr threw a costly interception) and a run defense that allowed their archrivals to salt the game away with two long drives in the fourth quarter.

Last week, LSU coach Brian Kelly said the team would "move aggressively" on interior defensive linemen in the transfer portal and down the stretch run for the 2024 recruiting class. The first sign of that happened Monday night. LSU landed a commitment from Shone Washington, a junior college prospect from New Orleans who started his career at Georgia, he announced on social media.

Browns' west coast woes continue
DENVER — The Browns will limp to the team plane for a week-long trip to Los Angeles after losing 29-12 to the Broncos on Sunday to fall to 7-4. With the Steelers coming alive and beating the Bengals earlier in the day to improve to 7-4, it was a perfect opportunity for the Browns to game some ground on their division rivals, but it wasn’t to be. The Steelers have the tiebreaker in the division by virtue of their division record. The Steelers are 3-1 in the division and the Browns are 3-2.

New maps show where snowfall is disappearing
But less snow falling from the sky isn’t as innocuous as just having to shovel less; it threatens to reinforce warming, and disrupt food and water for billions of people. Climate scientists say the future of snowfall is pretty clear: A warmer world driven by human pollution means precipitation is more likely to fall as rain than snow, all else being equal.
LSU basketball builds first-half lead, then holds off North Florida's charge
The last time we saw the LSU men’s basketball team on the Pete Maravich Assembly Center floor two weeks ago, the Tigers sleepwalked through the first first half of their game with Nicholls State. That evening, the Tigers — who were favored by 20½ points — trailed the Colonels by 19 at halftime of an eventual 68-66 setback that thoroughly frustrated coach Matt McMahon. LSU was determined to not let that happen two games in a row on its home floor Friday night.
Saints rule out 2 players ahead of rivalry game with Falcons; rookie DE questionable
|
The New Orleans Saints will be without their top cover corner for this week's game against the rival Atlanta Falcons. Defensive back Marshon Lattimore was officially ruled out for the Week 12 contest with an ankle injury. This will be the first game Lattimore has missed this season. In 10 games, the four-time Pro Bowler has two interceptions and eight passes defended. Lattimore suffered his injury in the Saints' Week 10 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, leaving the field on a cart in the second half.

The New Orleans Saints defensive end was visiting New Orleans East for a Thanksgiving turkey drive when the subject of this being rivalry week came up. ‘Maestro’ picks up the tune Bradley Cooper started in ‘A Star is Born’
(CNN) — In hindsight, Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut “A Star is Born” served as the commercial tune-up that paved the way for “Maestro,” as both films deal with the price of art as well as loving an artist. The newer film follows the fact-based tale of conductor Leonard Bernstein, with beautiful performances by Cooper and Carey Mulligan anchoring a movie that’s not always easily accessible, but certainly far from shallow.
