Education Should Be a Partnership. So Why Are Many Families Left in the Dark?
By Sara Olson After 26 years in education—16 of them in administration—I have come to expect the annual presentation, “What It Means to Be Title I.” Each year, I click through the same slides: a reminder that families must be informed about state testing outcomes, that our teachers hold valid degrees and licenses, and that Title I schools serve students in poverty. Each year, I stand before families as they quietly listen. They do not ask questions.

Here’s why I love cookbooks: They are focused on deliciousness They contain endless opportunities to reimagine food and cooking They allow the reader the opportunity to envision a different future and to look more deeply into our shared experiences They help us understand how we live – and eat – today Cookbooks are about recipes. Each also poses a question: where have you been and where are you going? Below are cookbooks published in 2023 that inspire me and, I hope, you.
A Local Cook's Recipes Highlight the Rich Culture, and Tastes, That Go Into Marin's Indigenous Cuisine
Are you on a food journey? Do you eat keto or paleo, avoid certain foods or been told by a health professional to change your diet? Food and how we eat is intensely personal, defined by how and where we grew up, who taught us to cook (or not), individual health needs, and the value we place on convenience and the local food shed.
Three Native American dishes to celebrate fall
For a new approach to Thanksgiving, look deeper into the past. Recipes for berry slump, cider brined turkey and kanuchi showcase richly different slices of Native American culture. Across cultures, fall is a time for celebrating the bounty of hearty food, gathering with family and feasting together. While November is often tied to Thanksgiving in the larger US culture, the fraught narrative that has long fuelled the holiday is a reminder to look deeper.
A brined turkey to 'rival all others'
In her new cookbook, Chími Nu'am, Sara Calvosa Olson celebrates Indigenous American ingredients and seasonal flavours, like roasted turkey with apple brandy acorn gravy. With Chími Nu'am (which means "let's eat" in Kanuk), Olson looks to encourage people to start thinking about a decolonised diet, connecting to the land and native ingredients prior to European colonisation. "This is about cooking not just for ourselves, but for our communities," Olson said.
Soul food
It is through food that I pass my knowledge, stories, language, and love to my sons. It is through food that I fight for a better world for the people that will call me an ancestor, and for the elders that we all truly answer to - the oak trees, the river, the salmon, all the plant and animal relatives and ecosystems that rely on us to protect them. ~ Chími Nu'am, Sara Calvosa Olson.

Approximately 92,000 Nebraska volleyball fans packed Memorial Stadium on August 30, 2023, to watch the Nebraska Huskers sweep Omaha in an outdoor match, setting a new women’s sporting event attendance record. Local hotels benefited from the midweek event, as most available guestrooms in the market were filled. The “Sea of Red” is a common sight in Downtown Lincoln as the fall months begin, with area crowds tailgating, packing the bars, and running around Downtown in Husker gear.

Omaha’s COVID-19 Impact and Hotel Recovery
Amid a worldwide pandemic, the lodging industry has been facing a downturn that is greater than the past two lodging-market declines combined. According to STR , Downtown Omaha occupancy levels fell by 53% in 2020, while ADR contracted by 20%. This resulted in the lowest hotel performance metrics for this market ever recorded by STR, with RevPAR dropping roughly 63% in 2020. Similarly, in the greater Douglas County area, annual RevPAR declined approximately 54%, according to county-collected data.
Hot Toddy Time - Edible Shasta Butte
From the day after Thanksgiving until New Year’s Day, I can be found walking around the house with various types of hot toddies, usually winging it from one potion to the next. The original toddy was made from the fermented sap of the toddy palm in India. It has evolved through several cultural appropriations into something resembling more of a Scottish cold cure. There aren’t very many rules with toddies; you can use brandy, rum, whiskey, or skip the alcohol and use tea and spices.
Spumoni Cookies - Edible Shasta Butte

A Holiday Gatherer’s Gifts
Candy Cane Lane bring a friend this holiday, Bring a friend who loves to play, we’ll eat all the candy canes!” —Sia As an agnostic woman raised by wolves and MTV, it is a mystery why I go in so hard for the holidays. Obviously, I love food, and I love the allbets- are-off stretchy pants extravaganza, but my heart longs to call on friends and family and craves being wrapped in the nostalgia of happier times like a cozy shawl.
BUTTERMILK CHOCOLATE ACORN TEA BREAD
This is basically a giant brownie loaf, but the acorn adds a little something nuttier. It’s such a simple quick bread dessert. You can dress it up with nuts or raspberries or a light dusting of powdered sugar. You can also throw in some candy cane pieces for holidays, wrap it in parchment, and give it to your neighbors. DEER MEAT STEW WITH VEGETABLES
In this púufich (deer/deer meat) stew I used deer meat from the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, in Maidu territory. More specifically near where the Yauko settlement may have been located, according to an old map in the CSU Chico digital library. Some California tribes traditionally cooked deer meat inside an acorn soup, thickened with acorn flour and nutmeats.

First time sex advice bit insecure of my body
Honestly? Talk to him about your insecurities before you go through with it. He’ll most likely say he isn’t bothered, thinks you’re gorgeous as you are, and then you’ll be way more relaxed and enjoy yourself more.
Sunday, August 27th, 2017 Coffee & Content
Happy Sunday to you all. Today, I have two tremendous videos for you to enjoy with your java. First up, it's a look at some screenplay lessons from Ex Machina. I know we have a ton of writers on Stage 32 who have very mixed feelings about this script, so I hope to see some debate in the comments section! Next up, a look at how film editors think and cut by feel. I absolutely love this video and think you'll find it fascinating as well. Personally, I think this content pairs best with a dark roast.
