Dan Whisenhunt grew up in Alabama, graduating from the University of Alabama in 2005 with a degree in broadcast journalism. After working at The Anniston Star, he worked at the Chattanooga Times Free Press before moving to Atlanta in 2011 to work at Reporter Newspapers, now known as Rough Draft. He started Decaturish.com in 2013 and sold it to Appen Media Group in 2024. In 2026, he was promoted to executive editor of Appen Media Group, overseeing seven newspapers and three websites.

A camera recorded a confrontation that led to a fatal shooting on Fisher Trail in DeKalb County, according to an arrest warrant. The shooter, Parke Russell, 24, faces a charge of murder and remains in the DeKalb County Jail. The victim is identified as Omer Ahmadi, 42. A fundraising campaign for Russell’s legal expenses implies Russell was acting in self-defense.

Man sentenced for fatal shooting during booting dispute

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — An argument over booting resulted in a fatal shooting last year. The shooter, Otis Blakes, 34, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of booting company employee Kirwin Hinds, 47. A jury on Sept. 25 found him guilty of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. According to the District Attorney, the incident unfolded around 7 a.m. July 19, 2025.

I relate to Alexander Knox in the Batman movie. I know that's obscure, but I appreciate that he believed in his story when no one else did.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I wrote a story about a local OBGYN facing medical malpractice suits. It was a topic few journalists will touch.
