Philippines meat importers oppose reclassifying pork jowl as tariffs loom: MITA
Philippine meat importers have opposed a proposal to reclassify frozen pork jowl as swine meat instead of edible offal, ahead of a Sept. 21 public hearing by the Tariff Commission on the measure, warning that the move would raise import tariffs and increase costs for the industry. The Tariff Commission will hold a public hearing Sept.
LGR5-positive fibroblasts orchestrate skin mechanoadaptation through JAK1 modulation
Abstract Mechanical adaptation is a fundamental yet poorly understood process in stromal tissue biology. Here, we identify a population of LGR5+ mechanically induced regulatory fibroblasts (LGR5+ MIRFs) in mouse and human dermis, whose induction requires a YAP/AP-1-dependent transcriptional program. LGR5+ MIRFs channel mechanical input toward adaptive tissue remodeling by coordinating extracellular matrix reorganization while restraining inflammation.

Effects of emotions on concentration and usage intention to short video viewing among older adults
Abstract Concentration and usage intention levels in elderly short video viewers are investigated in relation to emotional influences. The experiment included three short video groups corresponding to positive, neutral, and negative emotional categories. Eye-tracking technology was used to capture real-time changes in the elderly’s concentration, and an OpenCV-based facial emotion recognition system recorded their facial expressions.
Glycolytic enolase 1-induced H4K12 lactylation activates quiescent breast cancer stem-like cells in triple-negative breast cancer
Abstract Activation of quiescent or extremely slow-cycling breast cancer stem-like cells (qsBCSCs) contributes to tumor progression, yet the regulatory mechanisms involved in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) remain elusive. We developed a dual-reporter system combining NANOG-EGFP and H2B-mCherry pulse-chase labeling to separately identify qsBCSCs and active BCSCs (aBCSCs) in vitro and in vivo.
Ophthalmic and psychiatric health: the overlooked connection between ocular diseases and mental disorders
Abstract Ocular diseases and mental disorders represent major global public health challenges. Although prior studies have explored associations between ophthalmic conditions and psychiatric disorders, systematic investigations into their underlying mechanistic connections remain limited. This review synthesizes evidence from high-quality literature to delineate the bidirectional links between ophthalmic and psychiatric health.
Soliton-assisted massive signal broadcasting via exceptional points
Abstract Chip-scale all-optical signal broadcasting, which replicates data across multiple wavelength channels via Kerr nonlinearity, is critical for high-throughput optical communication and computing systems.

Adapting general representations of pretrained vision foundation models to seismic understanding
Abstract Interpreting seismic data remains challenging because most learning-based approaches rely on specific architectures that require retraining for each task and generalize poorly across subsurface regimes when training data are limited. Here, we introduce a cross-domain transfer learning framework that adapts a vision foundation model for seismic understanding.

Microwave-acoustic-based isolated gate driver for power electronics
Abstract Electrical isolation is critical to ensure safety and minimize electromagnetic interference (EMI), yet existing methods struggle to simultaneously transmit power and signals through a unified channel.
Dual-symmetry-guided assembly of complex lattices
Abstract Complex lattices that combine low- and high-order rotational symmetries underpin functional materials ranging from kagome superconductors1,2,3 to auxetic mechanical networks4 and photonic crystals with topologically protected states5,6,7. However, assembling such structures typically requires anisotropic particle shapes, directional bonding or fully imposed templates8,9,10,11, which often suffer from severe kinetic frustration and defect trapping.

Impact of inclusive leadership on team innovation performance of new generation employees: the role of team learning from failures and career calling
Abstract Grounded in the theory of team regulation (TRT), this study investigates the boundary conditions and mechanisms through which inclusive leadership affects the innovation performance of teams made up of new-generation employees. Data was collected using a 3-wave time lagged questionnaire design from 400 employees nested within 77 teams. The proposed hypotheses were tested using SEM in combination with bootstrapping analysis.

South Korea reports 4 outbreaks of ASF in Jan, impact on domestic pork minimal so far
South Korea reported four new outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) in January, a significant increase compared to the six cases reported for all of 2025, according to the ASF Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters on Jan. 27. The first 2026 case was detected on Jan. 17 at a pig farm in Gangneung, Gangwon Province. Over the next ten days, three more farms tested positive, and the fourth case was confirmed on Jan. 27, according to multiple local news outlets.

COMMODITIES 2026: China's pork imports to fall amid ample domestic supply, tariffs
This is part of the COMMODITIES 2026 series, in which our reporters bring to you key themes that will drive commodities markets in 2026. Global pork production is expected to rise in China, the US and Brazil in 2026, while consumption growth is set to remain modest, according to analysts at CERA, part of S&P Global Energy. Pork trade flows are poised to shift as China and Japan reduce imports and Brazil expands its export footprint.

Evidence for proactive interference effects in repetitive checking tasks
ABSTRACT Why does repeatedly checking one’s actions, a common behaviour of those with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), undermine memory confidence? The most accepted explanation is that repetitive checking decreases confidence by increasing familiarity with the task, leading to the encoding of fewer perceptual details. We argue that checking, per se, does not decrease memory confidence.

Opinion: Protect California’s international students so they don’t live in fear of ICE
Six years ago, I arrived in the United States as an international student, eager to pursue my education. Now, as a community advocate and a social worker training in California, I’ve come to understand that safety is not just a fundamental right but a necessity for wellbeing. A secure environment allows people to thrive, but for many international students like myself safety is fragile. The very institutions meant to protect us often fall short.

Novel Gene Clusters for Secondary Metabolite Synthesis in Mesophotic Sponge‐Associated Bacteria
1 Introduction Sponges (phylum Porifera) are renowned as a prolific resource of bioactive compounds, with approximately 200 new compounds, including nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS), polyketide synthase (PKS) and terpenes, being reported each year (Laport et al. 2009; Varijakzhan et al. 2021). However, increasing evidence suggests that many of these bioactive compounds are not directly produced by the sponges themselves but by their symbiotic bacteria.

Extending temporal-coupled-mode theory to the antiresonant regime
The antiresonant effects, which are opposite to the resonant effects, describe the destructive interferences that occur in optical resonators.
